Part of what makes Encore Bank the best is the people who represent us, both at work and in their communities. We only employ the best of the best in banking, and we want you, our current and potential partners and clients, to know them as more than just Encore employees. We want you to know them as people you can turn to when you need something. In this week’s team member highlight, we sat down with Teck Ong to discuss him and his role here at Encore Bank.
What is your current job title at Encore, and how long have you been in this position?
I am the SVP/Head of the Credit Analysis Division. I have been with Encore since February of 2019.
Can you give me a brief overview of what it is that you do for your job at Encore?
I manage a team of 9 credit underwriters, 7 of them are seniors and 2 are juniors. Half of the team members are located here in Central Arkansas while the rest are spread out in Texas and Missouri, but we all work as a team and are ready to help one another. We provide support to our lending team to facilitate customers’ loan needs while ensuring we have good quality loans for the bank. To achieve these, our team works with the loan officers in loan structuring and loan underwriting by way of performing cash flow, financial spreads, and financial analysis. Our team also collaborates with the SCO’s, CCO, and CLO in getting these loans approved. As the team manager, it is my job to ensure an efficient and timely flow of analyses, assist and support underwriters with their works, and provide coaching when necessary.
What led you to Encore, and what was the deciding factor in making the switch?
Throughout the 20 plus years of my banking career, I have had the opportunity to work at both the community and larger banks. I have always enjoyed the people I work with and also provide the feeling of camaraderie among the employees and stakeholders. It is with this camaraderie and sense of teamwork that my people and I are able to help this bank grow, something I find pleasure in. Encore has exactly all of these factors and the decision was natural and easy for me.
What led you to choose a career in banking?
To be honest, I stumbled on a banking job as a fresh graduate from college, and I have loved it ever since.
How would you describe the culture at Encore?
Encore Bank is very unique in the way that it is a smaller bank in size but has the reach of a larger bank. All employees share a team spirit and are ready to help one another because we believe in winning it together.
What do you like most about working for Encore?
I like the trusts that the management endows in each of the employees and in what they do best so they can shine. I also like the flexible work culture it cultivates.
Along with many industries, the banking industry is ever changing. What types of changes do you think will happen in the next five years?
Seeing the Millennials’ proclivity in using digital means for their banking needs, I strongly believe it is imperative for banks to adapt to this change sooner rather than later. I applaud the management team for having this vision by branding Encore as a boutique bank, small yet personable, and by investing in FinTech companies/software that will benefit the bank in its growth strategy.
Who has been the most influential person in your life, either work related or personal?
I would say it is my mom. She is a hard worker and has the tenacity and patience to see things get done. She inspires me to be persistent in what I do and to constantly improve myself.
What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
I believe in staying active and healthy so I will get on a treadmill or elliptical machine for a run. On my off days, I like to go out for a bicycle ride and enjoy watching a movie. Occasionally, I would go for a run and a hike in the park.
What is something that you are looking forward to this year, either work related or personal?
Honestly, I would like to see the pandemic go away so I can travel overseas. This would allow me to visit my family back in Malaysia, whom I have not been able to see since 2017.
What’s one location you’d love to see Encore Bank branch to?
Looking at Encore’s current footprint, I believe we are present in a lot of markets that have strong growth potential and can sustain the bank’s long-term growth strategies. Therefore, I believe that we could expand to any other locations with ease as long as these markets meet our criteria and we have a talented team in place.
What does Building Something Different mean to you?
My idea of building something different is for customers to find it pleasant and easy to bank with Encore. Customers can leverage our experienced bankers, who understand their needs, to help achieve their business and personal goals. This will create satisfied customers who are happy to have partnered with Encore for their accomplishments.
